How to Become a Rockstar Marketer
Question
I don’t have a marketing background at all, but I want to break into the field.
What does it take to become a rockstar marketer that every company is fighting to hire?
Answer
If you want to grow into a high-value marketer from the ground up, ask a lot of questions and take ownership of the company’s goals.
Start by getting any job at a company you like. Once you’re in, ask questions constantly. You won’t understand most things at first, but that’s exactly why you should ask: Why this headline? Why this picture? Why this channel? Push past the discomfort of "bothering" people and try to understand how the business works from end to end.
Next, broaden your sense of responsibility. Even if you’re an intern working on subtitles, if sales drop in Q4, you should feel responsible and try to understand how to improve. Learn your market and your product. As you do this, you’ll uncover gaps in your knowledge — those gaps become the things you learn through LLMs, books, and courses.
People notice when someone asks smart questions and takes ownership. Those are the people everyone wants to give more work to. If you keep that mindset and stay close to marketing, eventually the marketing work will find you.
This isn’t just theory. I’ve been in the field for over 10 years. I worked my way up from a copywriter to CMO and have mentored numerous interns into top-tier specialists.
